I’m sure some of you noticed the new addition to out handcycle family, the all new FAT Explorer Handcycle. At first glance it does not differ much from the latest Explorer III, but there is more to this bike than meets the eye.

The most noticeable difference are the wide tires that are used to ride on soft terrain such as snow, sand, or mud. These tires are designed for low ground pressure; the inflation pressure varies between 8-10 psi, which allows for better grip on the traveled surface. The wide tires come with wide rims so a few changes had to be made to the frame to accommodate for the increased rim dimensions.

The standard FAT Explorer Handcycle drive system differs considerably from the standard Explorer III version. The front is powered by 750W electric motor and the rear drivetrain has Shimano XT 10 speed derailleur, 11-36T cassette. The intermediate set of gears is still the same, a bearing hub with 22T/28T. There is an option to order this handcycle with a rear Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 XL.

The 750W electric motor is a standard in FAT Explorer. Of course it comes with a rechargeable battery. The battery power can last anywhere between 25 – 100 km (15 – 62 miles) depending on the terrain. It will perform for a longer time on flat paved roads; going uphill and through tough terrain will drain the battery faster. These distances were estimated while riding the bike using power assist only, without adding any support by pedaling. The battery will last longer if the electric motor workload is decreased by muscle power.
The FAT Explorer was tested all throughout the last winter in the mountains. It is finally ready to go and we are glad we can offer such a beast of a handcycle.
